Silent Key

In ham radio, a Silent Key (SK) is a respectful term meaning a ham operator who has passed away.

It comes from old telegraphy: when the operator died, their key went silent. In modern ham use, you’ll see it in obituaries, club announcements, and on-air mentions like “We lost a Silent Key.”

In remembrance of James "Sarge" Sergent KN4RDT (9/28/62-1/14/25)
